Third man sent to prison for Hamilton bar violence

The third of four men charged in the deadly Doubles Bar shooting last summer in Hamilton has been sent to prison.

Cory Cook II, 23, of 9th Street in Hamilton, was sentenced to four years in prison Monday. He pleaded guilty to attempted felonious assaultand received the maximum sentence.

Cook’s attorney Dennis Adams told the judge, “My client was not the aggressor, he did not go there with the idea of causing trouble.”

Adams said before the shooting, Cook was working two jobs to provide for his young son, who was in the courtroom along with the child’s mother.

Cook’s mother and the mother of his child spoke on his behalf before the sentence was handed down.

Last week, two others involved in the gun violence that resulted in one death and multiple injuries were also sent to prison.

Mondale Goens, 21, of Maple Ave., pleaded guilty to aggravated assault. He was sentenced today to 4½ years in prison.

Rodrick Curtis Jr., of North 7th Street, who is Goens’ first cousin, also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and received the same prison sentence of 4½ years.

Kalif Goens died in the July 24 shooting.

Last month, Cornell McKennelly II pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for firing the shot that killed Kalif Goens in the parking lot of the bar on Hamilton’s west side.

Days after the shooting at Doubles Bar that injured seven people, two men were killed in a drive-by shooting in Hamilton, which was a murder for hire, according to court records.

Four people are facing the death penalty in the Central Avenue shooting and are scheduled for trial later this year They are:

  • Zachary Harris, 24, of Columbus, charged with two counts of aggravated murder
  • Tony Patete, 23, of Newark, two counts of aggravated murder
  • Melinda Gibby, 35, of Lancaster, two counts of aggravated murder
  • Michael Grevious II, 23, of Maple Ave., Hamilton, one count of aggravated murder
