Planned Parenthood receives donation in Butler County lawmaker’s name

A "generous" donation was made to Planned Parenthood Action Fund on behalf of Ohio Rep. Candice Keller, a staunch opponent of the organization.

The first-term freshman Republican Middletown lawmaker called the donation made in her name by an Oxford constituent “very alarming.”

Keller runs the Community Pregnancy Center in Middletown and opposes the abortion services provided by Planned Parenthood.

“I would never donate one nickel to an agency that slaughters children,” said Keller. “I am sorry that this person felt the need to do something like this, however, it means I’m making a difference. This is why people elected me, and I don’t mind doing the front-line work.”

Planned Parenthood is a national women's health organization, and the group says abortion services accounts for around 3 percent of its total services. The group does receive federal funding, but it's not permitted to use any of those funds for abortion services. Funding for Planned Parenthood could end, or be significantly cut, with a Republican-controlled White House and Congress.

Keller said she plans to “thank” her constituent by sending him a baby feet pin, a symbol for those who are pro-life.

Brad Miller, a spokesman for the Ohio House Republican Caucus, said donations like this don't happen often but they do happen. He said Ohio Rep. Kyle Koehler, R-Springfield, had received a similar donation.

“It’s an odd way to voice displeasure,” Miller said. “In the battle of information, and getting your position across, it might be something you unfortunately have to address.”

The most notable donation like this was when Planned Parenthood received a few hundred thousand donations made on behalf of Vice President Mike Pence.

But he said that’s where a lawmaker’s voting record comes into play, where a House member can “have proof of where they stand.”

“It might be an inconvenient circumstance, but it’s something that can be easily disproved,” he said.

This news organization reached out to Planned Parenthood and the donor about the donation, but messages were not returned before deadline.
