OhioMeansJobs-Butler County is launching two new efforts to help job seekers via educational opportunities.

Basic LinkedIn, a workshop on the world’s largest professional networking site, will be offered every other Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon, starting Sept. 12, according to Melissa O’Brien, the agency’s business services manager.

“The workshop will help job seekers learn how to create a LinkedIn profile as well as how to navigate LinkedIn,” O’Brien said. “Job seekers will be taught important tools to help employers find the job seeker; as well as tools to self-promote and build their network.”

A Beginner Keyboarding workshop, developed by OhioMeansJobs-Butler County staff, will also be offered for those who lack proficiency in typing skills.

“With the paradigm shift in job applications from manual to electronic, coupled with on-line applications, it is imperative that OhioMeansJobs clients have adequate typing skills,” O’Brien said. “The decision to create this hands-on workshop was based on the observation of individuals who were attending the computer basics classes. The instructor noticed that a significant number of participants were using the hunt and peck method to type simple words or phrases slowing down the class.”

Typing at the hunt and peck speed has a direct impact on the number of job applications that can be completed by OhioMeansJobs clients on a daily and weekly basis, she said.

“This workshop, coupled with our Computer Basics, Excel, Interview Prep, Effective Resume Writing, Microsoft Word and Ohio Means Jobs provides all the needed tools to effectively apply for and compete in the 21st century workplace,” O’Brien said.

This will be a bi-monthly workshop to start so organizers can gauge interest and demand.

OhioMeansJobs-Butler County will continue to offer workshops in Computer Basics, Basics of Microsoft Excel, Basics of Microsoft Word, Resume Development, Interview Preparation and a general OhioMeansJobs workshop.
