Liberty Spirits plans to open its new distillery in Middletown in early April.

The business will produce its own vodka, rum, moonshine, rye whiskey and bourbon, according to owner Mike Robinette.

A storefront at 1357 Central Ave. will open April 7 and house the bar, tasting, gift shop and distillery. Moonshine, rum and vodka will be available for purchase by the bottle.

A plan is in the works to open a larger bar at 1316 Vail Ave. and have distilling continue to take place on Central Avenue.

Robinette said the Liberty Spirits moniker hails from the American Revolution era, specifically Patrick Henry’s famous speech, “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death.”

Hours for the tasting room will be 4 p.m. to midnight Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Tours of the distillery will be available by appointment.

The new business plans to hold an open house/grand opening April 7, with a sample tasting, food from area eateries and live entertainment.
