“Hidden Figures” tells the true story of black female mathematicians at NASA whose calculations helped fuel some of America’s greatest achievements in space. The book was recently made into a movie that was nominated for three Academy Awards.
FIRST REPORT: Popular community reading program coming to Hamilton
“With the arts renaissance in Hamilton, this is the perfect time to highlight literature,” Niki Motley, who is helping to lead the volunteer grassroots initiative of One City One Book, said in a statement. “Through the book reading and its themes, we hope to create conversations and activities that engage our residents in thoughtful discussions that emphasize our commonalities.”
Hamilton Mayor Pat Moeller said One City One Book is a great way to get people reading and to also foster many discussions among residents.
“I look forward to both reading the book and the community discussion,” Moeller told the Journal-News. “What a great way to weave the community together by means of reading and sharing.”

HOW TO GET A COPY OF ‘HIDDEN FIGURES’
Hamilton residents can check out “Hidden Figures” from The Lane Libraries in any one of the following formats:
- book (in Spanish and English)
- large print book
- young readers' edition book
- summary and analysis of the book
- eAudiobook
- audiobook (book on CD in Spanish and English)
- DVD and Blu Ray of the movie
- CD score of the movie
Checkout requires a Lane Libraries card, which is free to obtain. All formats can be placed on hold by visiting www.lanepl.org with your library card number. Patrons can also visit their local Lane Library location and see what is currently available.

Community events — including read-ins, book discussions, art performances and more — will take place throughout October in Hamilton as part of One City One Book. A full schedule of events will be released in September, according to Motley.
Free copies of “Hidden Figures” will be dispersed by the dozen throughout Hamilton in September, with the hope residents will enjoy the book and then pass it along to a neighbor, friend or co-worker to read, organizers said in a statement.
In addition, hundreds of copies of “Hidden Figures” will be distributed to Hamilton City Schools, Badin High School and parochial elementaries in Hamilton for teachers to incorporate into their classrooms.
One City One Book is being made possible with support from The Hamilton Community Foundation, The Lane Libraries, and Hamilton’s 17Strong micro-grant program, organizers said.

ALIVE AFTER FIVE: ONCE UPON A TIME
A kickoff for One City One Book, celebrating “Hidden Figures” as the book chosen for this first-time effort, will coincide with Alive After 5 today, May 4, in downtown Hamilton. Alive After 5, a monthly shop hop in downtown Hamilton, is open to the public with plenty of free parking after 5 p.m.
With a theme of Once Upon A Time, the first Alive After 5 of 2017 will have story time and other activities for children, The Lane Libraries bookmobile, a scavenger hunt, costume contest, and lots of specials from downtown Hamilton businesses.
Free bookmarks celebrating One City One Book will also be given away during Alive After 5.
