The photographs are “a good opportunity to showcase our history,” Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw said.
Before the photographs were hung the department’s lobby looked “sterile,” he said.
The signage will direct visitors at the City Building to the proper department, Muterspaw said.
First-time visitors often enter the police department lobby looking for the city’s water and tax departments, he said
Much of the work was completed by police department employees and the customized sign was made by Digital Visuals in Middletown. The total cost of the sign and photographs was $5,000 and Muterspaw is planning a community wide open house possibly next month.
“This is a very positive change,” Muterspaw said.
City Manager Doug Adkins said the police department enhancements will help the city improve its image.
“I’ve said before that how we look as a city matters,” he said. “The residents and the region will judge us in part on how we present ourselves. That includes picking up trash outside throughout the city at events such as Earth Day, and it includes the look inside of our City Building. It’s important that we respect the details that make One Donham Plaza such an interesting building, but it’s also important that we provide updates that make the City Building a pleasant place to visit.”
The city recently added an information kiosk and televisions in the lobby.
“We have a rich history, and it’s great to see people stop in the building to look at the historical pictures,” he said. “Each picture is its own story of our bright past.”
