Couple open a coffee shop

True West Coffee will serve coffees, culinary creations.

HAMILTON — Chris and Vanessa Cannon frequented coffee shops while students at Ohio University and dreamed of opening a place of their own.

Now the two Hamilton residents are doing just that, giving a sneak preview of True West Coffee at 313 Main St. from 5 to 9 p.m. today during the Main Street Music Fest.

The couple could have started a full-fledged sit-down restaurant, but decided on the simple pleasures of coffee, community and simple culinary creations.

“We want it to be a place where families can come and not feel overwhelmed by cost and get whatever they want,” Vanessa Cannon said. “They can just get a dessert or a drink.”

The business is scheduled to officially open on Dec. 5, serving coffee, cappuccinos and espressos, as well as home-baked goods made daily in the store and paninis, wraps, sandwiches and soups.

“We’re trying to keep things seasonal so that people will enjoy themselves in the winter and in the summer and not get stuck with the same old same old,” she said.

The Cannons said they love Hamilton but always felts like a place like True West Coffee was missing.

“We call it ‘the third place’ because you have home, you have work but this is kind of a place to get away from things.” Vanessa Cannon said.

The couple aims to make True West Coffee as kid-friendly as possible, but also plans to cater to teenagers, adults and business people as well.

“We just really want it to be an all-encompassing place,” Vanessa Cannon said.

A meeting room upstairs will be available for reservations at no charge. Open mic night will be held on Fridays and musical acts will perform on Saturdays.

Hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. . Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
