The ice and high water from the weekend storm caused the barges to break free from Jack’s Run Mile 4 and float two miles down the river.

Some wound up against the Emsworth Locks and Dams, where operations are currently suspended, according to officials.

Most of the barges were empty, but some were carrying cement and coal.

Another 35 to 40 barges also broke loose from R&F/ Boggs Island Mile 93 on the Ohio River with some of them traveling as far as Moundsville Bridge.
