Hightower talks energy policy with President Obama

When Stephen Hightower isn’t busy with running his family’s company, he is sharing his expertise and knowledge serving on two high-level federal advisory boards.

Hightower, who is president and CEO of Hightowers Petroleum Co. in Middletown, is a member of the National Petroleum Council, which advises the Secretary of Energy on national oil and natural gas issues and policies as well as a member of the National Park Foundation, which is a partnership with the National Park Service to enrich U.S. national parks and programs through private support. Both positions are approved by the White House.

Recently, while he was in Washington, D.C. for a petroleum council meeting, Hightower was invited to a dinner at a private residence in Maryland that President Barack Obama attended.

“It was an opportunity to be able to talk intimately with the president about energy policy as we are heading to become energy independent,” Hightower said.

Hightower said there was discussion about the need to move energy from the north to the south as there is lots of product in Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Ohio. He added that reversing the course of the pipeline is possible by the success of oil and natural gas finds in the U.S. and has provided a number of other opportunities.

Although he is a member of other boards in the area and region, Hightower continues to be very interested in serving on other corporate boards.

“This is an opportunity to serve my nation without being a politician,” Hightower said. “Serving on national boards prepares me for other opportunities.”

In addition to serving on these advisory boards, Hightower also serves on a number of boards across the area, region and state. On Tuesday, Ohio Gov. John Kasich reappointed Hightower to the Petroleum Underground Storage Tank Release Compensation Board for a term that expires in July 2017.
