Police are investigating an act of vandalism that occurred Tuesday at the Hamilton Masonic Lodge on High Street.

Lodge Master Seldon Brown told the Journal-News Tuesday night that 22 places around the entire building were damaged by black spray paint.

“I had a police officer tell me that I needed to come and see the vandalism,” Brown said. “The temple had been tagged in 22 places all around the building.”

Brown said what upsets him most is that the vandal tagged the expensive limestone on the front of the building.

“Limestone is very tough to clean and you can’t just use a pressure washer because it will grind it away,” he said. “The brick will also be tough to clean. All of the damage was done at eye level, but we will have to find out if we need to clean the bottom of the structure.”

Brown said the Lodge has insurance and he has been told that it could “be very expensive” to deal with the vandalism.

Police were not able to immediately confirm any details of the investigation.
