One man may face charges after a fight involving a hammer in Oxford.

Oxford police were called to the 600 block of South College Avenue at 9:04 a.m. May 25 on a report of a fight in progress between two men and involving a hammer.

The female resident had called police when a former boyfriend had forced his way into the apartment she shares with her current boyfriend, who was in bed at the time.

The former boyfriend was identified as James A. Cordas, 29, with whom she had an 11-year relationship.

Officers arrived to find the male resident and Cordas both in the bedroom and in need of medical attention by the Oxford Life Squad.

The male had blood covering his left ear, burn marks on his face and side and abrasions to his knees. Cordas was lying on the bedroom floor with obvious trauma to his left eye and bleeding from the back of his head.

The handle of a hammer was found on a couch in the living room and the head of the hammer was eventually found under the bed, both with blood spatter on them.

An investigation revealed the two residents had been in bed when they heard a knock and the woman opened the door to find Cordas there.

She told him to leave but he reportedly pushed past her and went to the bedroom where he threw a cup of hot coffee on the man and took a hammer out of his back pocket and hit him in the head, lacerating his ear.

The man responded by striking him with a closed fist.

When Cordas got up, the victim told the officer, he was not sure if he had another weapon and hit him on the back of the head with the hammer, ending the altercation.

The man said Cordas had told him, “You’re lucky I didn’t bring a gun this time, next time it will be different.”

The woman said she had recently called Cordas to retrieve property stored at their former residence, where Cordas is still living.

The officer attempted to speak to Cordas about the incident and he said, “I just lost it,” but refused to say more and invoked his Miranda rights. He was eventually flown by medical helicopter to Kettering Medical Center for treatment of his wounds.

The officer requested warrants be issued for Cordas for aggravated burglary and felonious assault.

The hammer has been entered into property as evidence at the Oxford Police Department.
