Death penalty sought in I-75 shooting

A Warren County grand jury delivered a 5-count indictment against Terry Froman, the man accused of shooting and killing his estranged girlfriend on I-75 near Middletown last month.

Froman was indicted Monday on two counts of aggravated murder with death penalty specifications, Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell said during a press conference.

Police say the Illinois man killed his ex-girlfriend and her teenage son and lead police on a multi-state search that ended near Middletown on Sept. 12.

They say Froman shot himself after ending 34-year-old Kim Thomas’s life.

Froman also faces murder and kidnapping charges in Graves County, Ky.

Lebanon Municipal Court Prosecutor Matt Graber said Froman has an arrest history for domestic violence, kidnapping and stalking charges in 1996 in McCracken County, Ky. He also has a 2005 arrest for domestic assault in Tennessee, but the charges in that case were later dismissed, Graber said.

Kentucky authorities say the morning of Sept. 12, Froman went to Thomas’ Mayfield, Ky., home. When he was approached by Thomas’ 17-year-old son, Michael “Eli” Mohney, Froman shot him twice at close range, according to Graves County Coroner Phillip McClain.

Froman was caught later that day on Interstate 75 near Middletown, about 360 miles from Mayfield. Thomas was found dead in the back of Froman’s white SUV near mile marker 31 on northbound I-75. She was found naked and bloody, and was shot multiple times, Warren County Deputy Coroner Doyle Burke said.

An autopsy on Thomas was performed Sept. 13 by the Warren County Coroner’s Office, but Coroner Dr. Uptegrove has declined to release specifics of that autopsy other than to say that Thomas was shot multiple times.

Kentucky police said Thomas’ friends went to her home around 10 a.m. Sept. 12 to check on her after she did not report to work. They found her son lying on the living room floor with two gunshot wounds, and they immediately called 911.

Prior to that call, the Kentucky State Police and the Paducah Police Department were investigating the possible abduction of a white female at a convenience store on the south side of Paducah, Ky., Redmon said. Paducah police viewed a video of a naked female, believed to be Thomas, getting out of a white 2004 GMC Yukon, that fit the description of Froman’s SUV, and being forced to get back inside the vehicle.

Kentucky and Ohio law enforcement tracked Froman’s location through his cell phone. An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper spotted the vehicle at 12:59 p.m. and a traffic stop was initiated at 1:13 p.m., according to the highway patrol. When the trooper tried to pull over the SUV, Froman drove for about two miles before pulling over at about 1:17 p.m.

Within a minute of Froman stopping, troopers heard at least one gunshot.

The shooting investigation shut down all lanes of northbound I-75 between Ohio 63 and Ohio 122 for about four hours, snarling traffic. Several motorists called 911 to report congestion and cars driving the wrong way, likely in an attempt to get out of the gridlock.
