Two men were seriously injured today at the Middletown Middle School construction site, according to Middletown police and fire officials.

Reggie Simmons and Urban Lanser fell from scaffolding, possibly 25 foot high, according to a police report. The incident happened about 1 p.m.

Simmons and Lanser were on two boards being held by an outstretched arm when the fall happened.

“It appears that this arm had sheared, causing the arm to fall and the boards to fall also,” police said after conducting an investigation. “Reggie and Urban were standing just above the window area and it appears that they fell through the window area.”

Lanser’s leg became caught on a piece of rebar, which was pointing straight up, according to the police report.

Both men were taken to Atrium Medical Center, where they were still being treated in the emergency department at 5:30 p.m., according to hospital officials.

“It was a bad fall,” said co-worker Jim Manley, who was at the scene. Manley told police he saw the men fall, but did not see what caused the accident.

OSHA was called to the scene and is investigating

Middletown City School officials posted information on Facebook and their website stating the accident had occurred to inform parents who might have seen police and fire at the school, according to Destini Burns, district spokeswoman.
